Start of the trip down. Lots of switchbacks, lots of tan dusty trails at the beginning. The trail we took down was the South Kaibab Trail. This is our group all ahead of us. Rose in red, Dave in gray, Eric in blue, Jane in white.
Still near the beginning. The backpacks we carry have all of our water and food for the trip down as well as anything we'll need overnight and for the trip the next day. Obviously you aren't too interested in bringing a lot of "extras" so I brought a clean shirt to sleep in and wear the next day. And a pair of flip flops to wear at the bottom and in the showers at the Phantom Ranch. I brought one extra long sleeve shirt that wasn't needed. A few toiletries and not too much more than that.
Dusty trail is starting to get a little red.
Jane and Dave.
Eric, shadow art.
Contemplating the meaning of life.
First glimpse of the Colorado river. Still a long ways to go.
Hello.... switchbacks!
Three mule groups coming up the trail as we go down.
Narrow trail, mules have right of way.
Long sunny path ahead. When I was hot and saw a sunny trail like this rather than the more usual shadowy trails it was a little discouraging...
Getting close to the river.
Rose and Jane.
So close that we can see the raft trips pulled up on the beach of the river. Now we are feeling closer.
The bridge we will need to cross to get to Phantom Ranch. After we crossed the bridge we still needed to walk around a mile or so up Bright Angel Creek to get to Phantom Ranch. It felt like a long hike. You are so close but not there yet.
Bright Angel Creek.
Eric and Steve outside our cabin at the bottom. Eric has changed out of his boots. It felt great to change out of them.
Bright Angel Creek.
Resting / washing our weary feet. It was around 7 miles down to Phantom Ranch.

Billy Elliot shadow art! What?
It was a great trip and fun to have some young ones (J&E) join us this year.
