Leaving the next morning. We woke early, before sunrise and had early breakfast at the camp. Then we got started hiking. By the time we were back at the Colorado River it was bright enough to take pictures. Goodbye Colorado. We were so happy to see you at the end of the trail yesterday, now we will leave you behind. We took a different trail up, the Bright Angel Trail, because it was less strenuous (therefore longer ~9 miles) and had water stations where you could refill water bottles on the way up.
Up ahead. Up is an understatement.
It was great to hike in the shadows. That is part of the reason for leaving early. Once the sun gets directly overhead it is brutal. But if you can get most of the way up before the sun comes over the rim, you are better off.

Two tunnels mark the fact that you are nearing the end of the trail. They are a welcome sight. It is funny how you start seeing more and more people (dayhikers) as you get close to the top.
California condors flying at the rim. Many tourists were impressed. I was a little more interested in sitting down than worrying too much about them. The assault on your senses at the top was something both Eric and I remarked on. Lots and lots of people. Very hot. We stood in line to get ice cream and almost couldn't stand being around all these people demanding their hot dogs and soda after a few days of hiking.
